Organizational Psychometric Masterclass – An Introduction to Techniques for Detecting Lying and Faking on Pre-Employment Tests
Professor Scherbaum (Chair of Industrial &Organizational Psychology Baurch College, The City University of New York
A long-standing concern with the use of many pre-employment tests (e.g., biodata, personality, interviews) is that applicants will respond dishonestly (i.e., fake, lie). The concern is that when individuals respond in a manner that is organizationally desirable, but not necessarily honest, there is a negative impact on the staffing decisions that are based on these tests. Given these concerns, managers and personnel specialists are very interested in detecting faking and lying when it occurs. Participants in this half day workshop gain an introduction and overview to the historic and modern techniques for preventing and detecting faking and lying on pre-employment tests. Particular emphasis will be given to techniques based on the analysis of response patterns, such as those that use item response theory, and techniques based on neuroimaging. Practical and technical issues with each technique are considered, as well as the research on their accuracy.
